Peace High Graduates Awarded Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal

Peace River School Division is thrilled to announce that Steven Bizuns and Deanna Dostaler, Peace River High School (PRHS) 2011-2012 graduates have been named recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.  The prestigious award has been created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada while at the same time honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.

“We are very proud of Deanna and Steven for the positive impact they have made at Peace River High School, the school community and as this award signifies their contributions on a provincial and national level as well” says Nan Bartlett, PRSD Board Chair.

Deanna was recognized for her involvement in the PRHS Peer Mentorship Program designed to support new and struggling students, for helping to draw awareness to the importance of respectful relationships through newsletter articles and her lead role in the PRHS Alternatives Lifestyle Club which promotes acceptance of all sexual orientations. Deanna assisted with the coordination of various events through this Program including the Peace PRIDE Parade, a workshop she helped co-facilitate at various schools and the weekly support group she ran for students.  Deanna received her medal at a special ceremony in Grande Prairie on January 18, 2013. In addition to this great honor, in 2011 Deanna was awarded the Premier’s Alberta Great Kids Award.

Steven will be recognized and receive his medal on February 8, 2013 in a special ceremony in Edmonton for his work and involvement with the Alberta Prevention of Bullying Youth Committee. Steven was chosen to join the committee created to provide important input into the government’s bullying prevention strategies and create awareness. Steven joined the committee in January of 2011 and since then has been working with a team of youth across the province to promote a caring, respectful and safe province – free from bullying. In November 2012 Steven represented the committee as a panel member for the Cyberbullying forum/webcast hosted by the Government of Alberta.

“Deanna and Steven are incredible young adults that have already accomplished and contributed so much to society” says Mark Owens, PRHS Principal. “We are especially proud of their passion in advocating for what they believe in, taking meaningful action to make a positive difference while inspiring others along the way. They are very deserving of this honour.”
