Information on going forward

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:

On behalf of the staff at Peace High, I would like to thank you for your patience, understanding and support over the last few weeks as we developed a learning plan we felt would be effective in this tremendously altered education system. It has not been easy, but together we will continue to work through and prepare students for what they need to support their continued learning for the rest of the year so they are well positioned for future success.

Moving forward, it is important to understand the following things:

  1. Marks in Powerschool on March 13, 2020, represent the baseline grades that serve as the starting point for the rest of the year.  Students’ grades on March 13, 2020, will not decrease as a final mark; however, there is now a wonderful opportunity for students to improve their grades before the year ends.

  2. Handing in missing and/or incomplete assignments from before March 13 is a priority in order to obtain a starting grade that best reflects students’ knowledge about content taught up to that point in the course. This will ensure everyone is at the same starting point.

  3. Students who had not accumulated a passing grade by March 13 now have the opportunity to increase their mark through further coursework with their teachers.

  4. Staff will continue to work until the end of the school year to help students increase their understanding and their grades in courses that they are enrolled in.

Why is it important to continue my learning in the courses that I am taking?  Why can’t I just be done now and take the grade that I had on March 13?

  1. The knowledge being taught to finish the courses will be crucial at the next level to be successful.

    1. Example: The knowledge of outcomes in Math 10C is needed to understand the content in both Math 20-1 and 20-2 next year.

    2. Example: The outcomes being taught in Math 9 and ELA 9 will help students to be successful in whatever High School path they have chosen.

    3. Example: The outcomes in ELA 30-1 will prepare students for their first-year courses in post-secondary.

  2. Students that choose not to continue their learning will require review to prepare them to be successful in the next level.

  3. Students can continue to get a better understanding of concepts and increase their grades moving forward.

  4. Student access to Rutherford Scholarships are based on the grades in 10-12.

  5. Grade 12 students applying for scholarships and post-secondary have continued opportunities to increase final grades.

  6. The student’s ability to earn honours and honourable mention.

  7. Staying active is extremely important for health.  Our teachers are offering both Physical Education and Sports Performance classes with assignments and suggestions to help with personal wellness.

  8. We continue to offer support and resources in Social/Emotional/Mental health with Julie and Project Peace with Google Classrooms and Google Meets for students.

  9. Teachers continue to offer Complimentary courses such as Industrial Arts (shop) Art, Drama, Foods, Cosmetology and Social Sciences for those students interested in continuing to learn and earn those credits.

  10. Students are able to access small group and one-on-one support through email, phone and Google Hangout in order to gain a better understanding of course outcomes instead of large group instruction.

  11. Students have the ability to continue to learn in a social atmosphere with other students.  We all know that face-to-face at the school is our best option, but in these times students have been able to connect with other students and staff, and it is an important option for all to utilize..

If there are any questions or concerns about any of this information, please feel free to call or email so that we can help.  We truly appreciate the engagement from students and families in these past few weeks and we encourage everyone to continue to access the quality educational services staff are providing in the best interest of the students we serve.
