Board Celebrates Students in Special Ceremony
In a special ceremony held yesterday, the Peace River School Division (PRSD) Board of Trustees celebrated the accomplishments of two grade twelve students. Cali Fraser, Peace River High School (PRHS) student was recognized for her selection to attend the “Institut Francais” and Keegan Winter, Fairview High School (FHS) student was celebrated for his accomplishments during the 2013 “Skills Competitions.”
“We are very proud of Cali and Keegan” says Nan Bartlett, PRSD Board Chair. “Their hard work and dedication has allowed them to experience unique opportunities and we are pleased to recognize their accomplishments.”
Keegan placed first at the Regional Skills Competition held in Fairview in April in the category of Outdoor Power and Recreation Equipment. Keegan then moved on to the Provincial competition in Edmonton where he earned another first place finish. The Provincial gold medal qualified him to join Team Alberta and compete at Nationals in Vancouver where he finished fourth overall in his category. The Skills competition is an annual event that proves to be a great opportunity for students to show their skills in trades based careers. Keegan has been working on small engines since he was 12 years old and currently has over 1000 hours experience as a heavy duty mechanic. He has been enrolled in various trades based options at FHS that are made possible with support from the Grande Prairie Regional College.
Earlier this summer, Cali attended the “Institut Francais” a cross-cultural trip to France that exposes students to French language and culture. Cali was one of three Canadian students and one of 60 students worldwide selected to attend. In order to be considered to attend the trip students must pass a certain level of the DELF French Language Diploma exam, write a letter of interest and provide a letter of support. Cali’s French teacher, Mr. Belanger provided a letter of support and describes Cali as “a good learner that showed interest in seeing first-hand what she learned about the French Revolution.” Cali has been enrolled in French programing since elementary school while taking French Immersion at Springfield Elementary and TA Norris Middle School and is currently enrolled in French programming at PRHS.
During the special ceremony Nan Bartlett, Board Chair extended congratulations to the students. “Thank you for your contributions to your school, community and for being an important part of the Peace River School Division family” said Bartlett. “We wish you all the best in your senior year of high school and in all your future endeavors.”
Frank Oberle, Peace River MLA was in attendance to share in the celebration and offer words of congratulations to Cali and Keegan. Oberle also delivered messages of congratulations from Hector Goudreau, Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley MLA who was unable to attend due to prior commitments.
