Peace River High School educator nominated for Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award
March 12, 2014 - Peace River School Division (PRSD) is thrilled to announce that Jennifer Favreau, Peace River High School (PRHS) educator has been nominated for Alberta Education’s 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award.
“I feel honoured and humbled by this nomination” says Favreau. “I am surrounded by amazing staff and feel very supported. I am fortunate to spend my days doing what I love and having this nomination come from a parent feels pretty special.”
Favreau is in her 11th year of teaching, all of which has been served in PRSD with the majority being served at PRHS. She teaches grades 9-12 Social Studies in both English and French and Career and Life Management. She also serves as the school’s Athletic Director, mentors new staff, coordinates the PRHS Learning Support Team program and is a member of the school’s timetable scheduling team. Favreau also organizes and chaperones the school’s trip to France offered every three years to students enrolled in the French Immersion program.
“Jen is an exceptional teacher and we are very happy to see her recognized in this way” says PRHS Principal Mark Owens. “Not only has she shown outstanding skills and dedication as a classroom teacher, she is enthusiastic about everything she does and is a great role model for both students and staff. Her leadership, passion and dedication through her many roles is greatly appreciated. She is very deserving of this nomination.”
When asked what makes the profession rewarding for her, Favreau explains there are many reasons why she loves teaching.
“I love seeing students get excited about what they are learning and when they make personal connections to the material” says Favreau. “I look forward to daily interactions with students, making learning relevant and engaging for them, and find it especially rewarding when I get to share in their accomplishments.”
The Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award program is designed to recognize outstanding Alberta teachers and principals who motivate students to exceed their own expectations, establish a stimulating learning environment, foster the development of students and their intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth and demonstrate caring for the well-being of students and colleagues, thereby contributing to a positive school climate.
“Jen’s nomination for this award demonstrates the positive impact she has on students and the school community as a whole” says PRSD Board Chair Darren Kuester. “On behalf of Peace River School Division, we thank you for your contributions and congratulate you for the honor of being nominated for this prestigious award.”
A selection committee consisting of members from the Alberta Education, Alberta School Boards Association, Alberta School Councils’ Association, Alberta Teachers Association, Alberta Deans of Education, Association of Independent Schools and Colleagues, the College of Alberta School Superintendents and the Council on Alberta Teaching Standards review nominations received province-wide through a rigorous selection process. Semi-finalists and finalists are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Favreau will be celebrated on a divisional level at the annual PRSD staff awards Gala on May 9, 2014.
